First off I want to say superb blog! I had a quick question which I'd like to ask if you don't mind. I was curious to find out how you center yourself and clear your mind before writing. I have had a difficult time clearing my mind in getting my ideas out. I truly do take pleasure in writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are usually wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any ideas or tips? Kudos!

You really make it appear really easy along with your presentation however I to find this topic to be really something which I believe I would by no means understand. It sort of feels too complicated and very extensive for me. I am having a look ahead in your next publish, I will attempt to get the hang of it!

Support the Experimental Station (501c3) and Material Exchange by playing a round of mini-golf! The Experimental Station hosts the First Annual Putt-Putt Green Design Competition, organized and curated by Material Exchange. Over the past several months, area artists, industrial designers, engineers, and school groups, submitted Rube Goldbergesque putting green designs, employing a range of circuitous and inefficient means to get the ball into the hole, out of which ten were selected. Each of the green designers was given a piece of Astroturf salvaged from German artist Martin Kippenberger's The Happy End of Franz Kafka's America, an exhibition held at the Renaissance Society in 2000. Adding to the challenge was the requirement that each hole be constructed from reclaimed materials and that the finished product have a built-in future use. Future lives for the holes include a skateboard ramp, bike panniers, and bird houses. Playful and beautiful in design, the holes will most certainly make for a fun and challenging round of mini-golf.
The Green Designers:
Steven Carelli
Dayton Castleman
Michael Dinges
Matthew Dupont
Evan Fulford
Matthew Hebert
Monica Herrera and Heather Mullins

About Material Exchange and the Experimental Station
Material Exchange, a group of Chicago artists and designers, engages issues surrounding waste and surplus through collaborative art and design projects that strive to meet specific needs using cast-off materials. Past projects have included a design class at the Illinois Institute of Technology in which students made furniture and a play loft for the Childcare Society in Hyde Park out of material salvaged from the set of August Wilson's play, Fences, performed at the Court Theatre; Culture Walk, an installation at the former Hyde Park Art Center, constructed from defunct art projects and outdated publicity materials; and a collaborative installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art called Biographical Extensions I, which constructed cubes/plant containers out of MCA waste materials. Material Exchange is taking part in the upcoming DIY exhibit at the A + D Gallery at Columbia College in March and will be collaborating with the Feel Tank project at Gallery 400, UIC in May and June.
Material Exchange is Sara Black, Charles Mcghee-Hassrick, John Preus, and David Wolf.
The Experimental Station is a not-for-profit (501-c-3) incubator of innovative cultural, educational, and environmental projects and small-scale enterprises. The Experimental Station was established in 2002 upon a long history of socially, artistically, and environmentally significant projects that had operated quietly but successfully at its location at 6100 S. Blackstone Avenue. For more information about The Experimental Station, please visit: www.experimentalstation.org.
Urban Woods was founded by John Preus and David Gundale in 1997. A highway reroute in Minneapolis went through an old stand of white oak trees. We bought a portable lumber mill on a zero interest credit card and began milling lumber. I moved to Chicago in 2002 to seek a master's degree in fine art from the University of Chicago. I still live in Chicago and work at the Experimental Station, with the art group Material Exchange, and continue to work with salvaged materials in various ways. This page is a showroom for some of these projects and serves as a rough history of the Urban Woods project
