- Urban Woods was founded by John Preus and David Gundale in 1997. A highway reroute in Minneapolis went through an old stand of white oak trees. We bought a portable lumber mill on a zero interest credit card and began milling lumber. I moved to Chicago in 2002 to seek a master's degree in fine art from the University of Chicago. I still live in Chicago and work at the Experimental Station, with the art group Material Exchange, and continue to work with salvaged materials in various ways.
